MP Lapointe Announces Over $2.3M for Tourism Expansion in Sudbury
January 22, 2025

SUDBURY – Tourism plays a crucial role in our local economy. Welcoming over 300,000 visitors annually across Science North sites, the popular tourist attraction has become more than just that, they are a leader in education. Supporting this sector is critical to our community’s prosperity and economic growth.

Today, Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced combined funding of $2,310,000 for Science North to expand programming for two flagship exhibits.

With funding through the Creative Export Canada, Science North has received $710,000 to expand Canada’s presence in global markets like Asia, the United Arab Emirates, Europe, and the United Kingdom. Science North produces some of Canada’s best, high quality, award-winning traveling exhibits for museums and science centres and this project will help increase their creative exports. The project focuses on the unique ‘Nature Exchange’ visitor experience, which encourages visitors of all ages to appreciate and learn about nature by bringing in items they’ve found in nature and exchanging them for natural items in the collection.

Since 2019, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund has provided $1.6 million to Science North for the Dynamic Earth Expansion project, including $500,000 through the ‘Supporting the Foundations of Cultural Infrastructure Initiative’. This funding will support Dynamic Earth’s Expansion project with the construction and excavation of new modern mining drifts and visitor experience spaces. Dynamic Earth’s expansion project will provide visitors with new immersive experiences that unveil the captivating and often unexplored aspects of the mining world.
