Op Ed: 2026 – Year of Execution

It’s been a month since Prime Minister Carney delivered his Davos address. Reaction to the speech was immediate and long-lasting as the speech continues to be discussed across the globe.

The call to action in the Prime Minister’s speech served as a beacon of hope for many. “The powerful have their power. But we have something too – the capacity to stop pretending, to name reality, to build our strength at home and to act together.”

For most of us, 2025 was a year of reaction as we witnessed major changes to the U.S.-Canada trading relationship. The U.S. trade action created unprecedented global turbulence and posed threats to Canada’s economic prosperity and sovereignty.

But while we and the world reacted, Prime Minister Carney acted. In six months, Canada signed 12 economic and security accords over four continents. Those agreements will generate $120 billion of investments in Canada. These are new investments that will grow and diversify Canada’s economy. It is also creating new opportunities for Canadian businesses and industries as new markets are secured.

At home, the Prime Minister took action on the cost of living, helping Canadians manage higher costs through tax cuts and the Food and Essentials Benefit. The new government preserved programs like the dental plan, pharmacare and the Canada Child Benefit. These actions are adding thousands of dollars in the wallets of Canadians who need assistance.

Just like 2025, the year 2026 will be equally momentous. Canadians can expect it to be a year of execution. The government will deliver on building more homes and strong communities. We will see major projects move from planning to building, using Canadian materials and creating thousands of good paying jobs.

It will also be a decisive year with the CUSMA review. The United States remains Canada’s largest trading partner, and our goal is for the continuation of a strong and stable trading relationship.

In an increasingly changing global environment, responsible leadership means preparing for disruption. Prime Minister Carney is doing exactly that, acting now to diversify Canada’s partnerships, strengthen our economic resilience, and protect our sovereignty.

In these uncertain times, Prime Minister Carney is providing certainty to Canadians. He is bringing our country together, and Canada is strongest when we are united.
