Two of the panel members, invited by Sudbury Member of Parliament Viviane Lapointe, were Don Duval, CEO of NORCAT and Doug Morrison, CEO of CEMI (Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation).
“Sudbury is home to one of the most advanced mining and technology ecosystems in the world. From NORCAT’s underground testing facilities to CEMI’s global leadership in mining research, Sudbury has the expertise and talent to help shape national policy at the highest levels of government,” stated MP Lapointe.
The Economic Growth panel discussion focused on accelerating Canada’s competitiveness in the critical minerals sector. The panel highlighted the pivotal role Northern Ontario and mining plays in Canada’s clean economic growth future.
The PM Economic Growth Panel was created by the Prime Minister’s Office to explore Canada’s opportunities in key sectors for growing the nation’s economy and diversifying trade. The panel has studied many sectors including energy, agriculture and technology. MP Lapointe spoke to the Prime Minister’s team, expressing the need to have mining and critical minerals as part of the economic growth discussion. They agreed and invited the MP to take part in assembling and organizing the panel.
“Sudbury has been leading the way in mining innovation for decades, and today that leadership is more important than ever. As the world moves toward electrification, secure supply chains, and low-carbon technologies, our region’s expertise gives Canada a decisive advantage. Today’s expert panel provided insights which will help ensure Canada not only competes but leads globally in critical minerals and the technologies that depend on them.”
