Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe Coordinating Local Talks, Unified Local Voice Against Trump Tariff Threats
SUDBURY – Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe is convening a local roundtable discussion with interest holders in Sudbury, including leaders from the mining and business sectors, to ensure Sudbury is working together in the face of ongoing tariff threats from the United States.
“If imposed, these 25% tariffs could have significant impacts on our economy and local jobs,” says MP Lapointe. “I understand how unsettling this is for people in Sudbury and across Canada, and I am working right now to coordinate a strong, unified, local response.”
At the same time, the federal government is taking strong steps to counter the US’ tariff threats and is fully committed to supporting Canadians through this challenge. The Prime Minister has been clear that Canada will not back down and is actively exploring all avenues to ensure Canada’s economic interests are protected, and a well-coordinated plan is in place.
“This is an all-hands-on deck issue,” says MP Lapointe. “I have reached out directly to the Mayor of Greater Sudbury, Paul Lefebvre, to discuss how we can work together to further map out the potential effects of these tariffs on our local businesses, workers, and families. As elected leaders, we will do the work to support people through what might be turbulent times.”
“While we face these threats, we must also remember that this is a time for unity and a ‘Team Canada’ approach,” she continues. “When we focus and stand shoulder to shoulder, Canadians are truly some of the strongest people in the world. I will continue to fight for Sudbury’s future by remaining a strong, credible voice for our community and working tirelessly alongside both local leaders and the federal government to navigate this challenge. We will ensure that our region, our industries, and our people remain at the heart of our fight for fairness and prosperity.”
