Sudbury Expands School Food Program
February 3, 2025

SUDBURY – Every child in Sudbury deserves access to healthy food, and the National School Food Program is helping make that a reality. Today, Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, announced the expansion of the National School Food Program in Sudbury, which will provide healthy meal options to students across the region.

Better Beginnings, Better Futures, who administers the program in Sudbury will receive $424,000 this year which will increase available resources by 56%. The new expanded funding is welcomed by the organization that hasn’t seen its funding change since 2017. During that time, the program has significantly increased the number of children served, in the face of rising food costs.  Over the years, the program has more than doubled its reach, with some schools now serving meals twice a day to meet rising demand.

In light of insufficient provincial funding, local schools have been using their own budgets and forging new partnerships with local businesses to ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals. With the new additional federal funding, these schools will be able to offer larger portions, extend the program until June, and include more schools currently on the waiting list.

Currently, 90% of schools in Sudbury are participating, serving an impressive 20,000 meals per day. This increased funding will allow for broader coverage, ensuring that more children benefit from improved and consistent meals.

“The National School Food Program will give students the nutrition they need to succeed. The additional federal support will allow us to serve more meals with greater reliability. This is an investment in our children’s futures, and I’m grateful to the local organizations and schools that are making this a reality every day,” said Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury.
