MP Lapointe announces $545,464 to help breakdown barriers for women in Sudbury
November 22, 2024

SUDBURY – Today, Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, announced $545,464 for the Sudbury Women’s Centre to develop new programming to help advance women’s economic security and prosperity in the workforce.

“Women continue to face persistent pay equity challenges, underrepresentation in high-paying jobs, a disproportionate load of caregiving responsibilities, and a lack of pathways for career growth. Unlocking economic and leadership opportunities for women will lead to a more prosperous and resilient economy for Sudbury,” said MP Lapointe. “When women have opportunities, we see the benefits for them, for their families and for our community as well.”

The new 36-month program ‘Breaking Down Barriers: Advancing Workplace Equity and Inclusion’ will address barriers within high-paying, male-dominated industries such as mining, construction, and engineering here in Sudbury. These industries provide a vast majority of the stable, quality positions within Northern Ontario’s employment market.

“We have skilled labour shortages across many sectors, including mining, we need to support women in these industries by breaking down the barriers that currently exist. Sudbury is at the heart of the critical minerals economy; we need to see barriers to women entering the field removed to bolster our workforce in this sector,” added MP Lapointe.

“SWC is proud to announce funding from Women and Gender Equality Canada for Breaking Down Barriers, a program dedicated to addressing systemic barriers and making male-dominated industries more accessible, safe, and inclusive—particularly for women and gender-diverse individuals impacted by gender-based violence,” said Ginette Comeau-Roy, Executive Director, Sudbury Women’s Centre.  “This initiative fosters meaningful opportunities in underrepresented fields and promotes healthier, more equitable workplaces across our communities. SWC is committed to fostering a community where we support all women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.”

The goal of the program is to create safer, healthier work environments in these industries for women to thrive and succeed. ‘Breaking Down Barriers’ will create a collaborative network of relevant agencies, which will then be used to distribute resources and knowledge to organizations within these industries. Sudbury Women’s Centre will partner with organizations to complete a comprehensive analysis of current policies and procedures. The analysis will evaluate how these organizations can build key concepts of diverse, female-led environments into their current frameworks. An external evaluator will measure and assess the impact of the systemic change project.
