MP Lapointe announces funding for tax clinics in Sudbury
January 26, 2024

Two Sudbury organizations will be offering free clinics this tax season with support from the federal government. Today, Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, announced $34,160 through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) for United Way Centraide North East Ontario/ Nord-est de l'Ontario and the Sudbury Community Service Centre.

Through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, community organizations host free tax clinics where volunteers complete tax returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.

More information about Sudbury tax clinics can be found below:

“The Community Volunteer Income Tax program is an invaluable resource for the residents of Sudbury. Not only does it help with the financial burden, but it also unlocks potential new streams of federal rebates and programs. This program would not be successful without the incredible support of volunteers. I want to acknowledge both the organizations and their volunteers who make this happen,” said Viviane Lapointe for Member of Parliament Sudbury.

Quotes
“The Community Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a vital service for low-income individuals. In 2023, United Way CVIT volunteers helped over 2,400 clients access more than $6.8 million in benefits, providing them with financial resources to help them meet their basic needs.” – Mary Lou Hussak, Executive Director, United Way Centraide North East Ontario/ Nord-est de l'Ontario
“The funding that the Sudbury Community Service Centre receives from the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program has helped us to support over 3000 low income, homeless and marginally housed individuals this past year, returning to them over $14 million dollars in tax rebates. Money that is vital for individuals living on fixed or low incomes to assist them to pay rent, purchase groceries, and pay utilities bills. Some may not realize, but completing and filing a tax return can be life changing,” – Kevin Cooper, Executive Director, Sudbury Community Service Centre
