SUDBURY – Timely and welcomed is the reaction to the news today from the Government of Canada who announced that Ukrainians arriving to Canada can receive financial assistance. The funds will help Ukrainians and their family members meet their immediate basic needs—such as transportation and housing—as they arrive in communities across Canada. The benefit will consist of a direct one-time payment of $3,000 per adult and $1,500 per child (17 years and under).

 Member of Parliament for Sudbury, Viviane Lapointe welcomes this announcement and recognizes how beneficial it will be for new families in Sudbury. To date, six Ukrainian families have arrived in Sudbury since the beginning of May.

“These families are arriving with nothing but a small suitcase of clothing. They have no housing, no food, no household items. Their children are entering school without any supplies. And they have no means to purchase these things upon their arrival,” noted MP Lapointe. “This one-time payment will help them get set-up as they secure jobs in the community.”

The Ukrainian community are actively recruiting assistance through volunteers and donations. Household items and monetary donations – especially gift cards from stores such as Walmart - would be appreciated.  Settlement services such as employment and childcare, etc. are also needed. That includes helping them travel to Sudbury and putting in place the necessary supports for Ukrainians and their families so they can be successful after they arrive. I want to sincerely thank the Ukrainian community for their tremendous work thus far with the families who have arrived in our community.”
